【Exhibition】Our water-saving agriculture technology was introduced at AI-CD’s 3rd Regional Forum in Senegal

2019.07.24

(Tottori, Japan, 24th July 2019) The water-saving agriculture technology with our foamed glass material, Porous Alpha, was introduced at the 3rd Sahel regional forum of “African Initiative for Combating Desertification to Strengthen Resilience to Climate Change in the Sahel and the Horn of Africa (AI-CD)” from 16th to 18th July 2019 in Senegal.

AI-CD is the initiative to contribute to making nations and communities resilient to climate change by promoting measures for combating desertification in the Sahel and Horn of Africa, established by the government of Kenya, the government of Senegal, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (“UNCCD”) at the 6th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (“TICAD VI”) in August 2016. (Please see the website for AI-CD.)

The regional forum of AI-CD was held in Senegal from 16th to 18th July. This forum had the exhibition to introduce the technology of Japanese companies, including our company’s product, Porous Alpha. For the forum and the exhibition, there were visitors of the high-level officials of the ministry of environment of seven countries in the Sahel region (Senegal, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Mauritania, Niger, and Nigeria) and officials from United Nations Development Programme (“UNDP”), Food and Agriculture Organization (“FAO”) and International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (“ICARDA”).

Our company’s foamed glass material, Porous Alpha, is made by recycling the used glass. By mixing Porous Alpha into the soil, the water retention capacity and aeration of soil are improved to realize water-saving and yield increase at the same time. As the raw material of Porous Alpha is waste glass, there were inquiries from countries having issues of waste management, in addition to the method of utilization of Porous Alpha.

Our technology has been verified in various countries such as Japan, Kenya, Mauritania, Senegal, Morocco, and Somalia. (The result of experimentation in such countries can be seen here). We continue to contribute to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as food and water issues through Porous Alpha, foamed glass made from waste glass.
